Cooling tower and pump placement – wind direction

In the previous note/ post,Cooling tower and pump placement – level relative to pump and piping , I mentioned three important things to consider when laying out the cooling tower and its pump: location, direction and level. That note provided a visual guide showing the importance of the cooling tower elevation relative to its pump, to help prevent air from entering the pump and causing damage.

This note/ post focus on the direction of cooling tower relative to wind direction. The visual guide included here will help you easily identify why the orientation of the cooling tower is also crucial for maintaining perrformance as specified in the manufacturer’s performance sheets.

Preventing hot and humid air recirculation is one of the key factors in ensuring the cooling water as cold as required, allows the chiller to operate at the lower power consumption (kW/RT), improving chiller plant efficiency.
