Cooling tower type according to water and air flow configuration

Cooling tower used to reject the heat to the ambient atmosphere. In water-cooled chiller, the rejected heat capacity at the cooling tower is the sum of heat absorbed at the evaporator and the power input to the compressor. This heat is transferred to the cooling water at the condenser, then reject to ambient at the cooling tower.
Cooling tower can be classified according to the water and air flow configuration in two type; 1) counter flow type and 2) cross flow type. In a counter flow tower, air flows in the opposite direction to the direction of the falling water whereas in a cross flow tower air flows in perpendicular direction to the direction of falling water.
