Pressure profile of condenser water system

In my note Understanding the pressure profile in open-loop water system, the sketch illustrated a general open-loop water system. In this note, I apply the concept of pressure profile specially to a chiller cooling system, also known as a condenser water system. This demonstrates how we can identify the maximum working pressure point, which helps us specify the appropriate piping pressure rating of our chiller plant.

In addition, this note presents two type of pressure profiles;

  1. Type 1, y-axis represents head (in meters) and x-axis represent piping location
  2. Type 2, y-axis represents piping height (in meters) and x-axis represents head (in meters).

Which type is suitable, it might depend on the specific analysis you’re performing or the aspect of pressure profile you want to emphasize. However, for a general understanding of the pressure profile in a cooling tower system and for the purpose of determining the piping pressure rating, Type 1 is often the more practical and insightful choice.
