Several standards and classification frameworks are used internationally to define data center infrastructure requirements and levels of resilience. Two widely referenced frameworks are ANSI/TIA-942 and the Uptime Institute Tier Standard.
ANSI/TIA-942 provides a comprehensive framework for data center infrastructure and addresses multiple disciplines, including telecommunications, architectural, electrical, mechanical, fire protection, physical security, and site-related considerations.
In contrast, the Uptime Institute Tier Standard primarily evaluates the topology, redundancy, maintainability, and fault-tolerance characteristics of critical data center infrastructure, particularly power and cooling systems.
Although the two frameworks use different methodologies and are not formally equivalent, their classification levels provide a useful basis for an indicative comparison of infrastructure resilience.
